Monopoly common mistakes: auctions, houses and house rules

Avoid common Monopoly Classic mistakes: skipped auctions, Free Parking jackpots, uneven building, missed mortgage charges and incorrect jail rolls.

Use this checklist with our Monopoly rules page, which follows US Classic C1009. Agree house rules before starting; a familiar family habit may change this edition’s game.

Leaving a declined property unsold

Declining the printed price triggers an auction, not the next turn. The player who declined can participate. Skipping auctions changes how deeds become available and how players spend their starting money.

Putting tax money on Free Parking

Tax payments belong to the bank. Free Parking supplies no payout, and landing directly on GO pays the ordinary 200. An extra reward injects money into the game and may help a player survive debts they otherwise could not pay.

Treating houses as decorations

Building counts control rent. Check the deed after each change, and keep the colour set even when buying or selling. A 3–1–1 arrangement is not repaired merely by saying you intend to buy more houses later.

Count the bank’s actual stock before planning purchases. Extra tokens used as substitute houses bypass the building limit. A trade cannot carry buildings to their new owner: clear the whole colour set first.

Forgetting mortgage costs in a deal

A cheap mortgaged deed may still need an immediate bank payment. Before accepting, list the trade price, the charge for receiving the mortgage and the amount needed to lift it. The mortgage walkthrough separates those payments.

Do not collect rent while its deed is face down. Conversely, do not assume every other deed in its group has lost its increased rent.

Rolling again after escaping jail with doubles

Doubles rolled to escape jail move your token and finish that turn. Paying or using a card before rolling follows the ordinary movement procedure instead. Keep the release method clear before the dice are thrown.

Making an expensive trade without building money

This is a decision error rather than an illegal move. A new set is useful only if your remaining cash fits your plan. Write down the cash left after the trade and after the houses you want, then compare it with the developed properties you might land on.

Stopping at the first bankruptcy

That elimination does not finish this Classic game. Settle the assets according to who is owed, then continue until only one player remains. A timed game or first-bankruptcy finish needs an agreed alternative rule.
