Common Liar’s Dice mistakes and bid conversions

Frequent errors in Perudo-style Liar’s Dice: wild ones, bid order, switching to and from ones, and who opens.

Most Liar’s Dice arguments are about bid order and wild ones. This guide follows the ruleset on our Liar’s Dice rules page.

Bid order mistakes

  • Lowering the quantity on a normal face. On 2s through 6s, you may raise the face or raise the quantity. Never lower the quantity.
  • Switching to ones without converting. From a normal bid, halve the quantity and round up. Five 4s can become at least three 1s.
  • Switching back without converting. From ones, double the quantity and add one. Three 1s require at least seven of a normal face.
  • Bidding fewer ones than the previous bid. While bidding ones, raise the quantity.

Counting mistakes

  • Counting only the bidder’s cup. A bid covers every die in play.
  • Forgetting wild ones. Ones count with bids on 2s through 6s.
  • Counting wild ones on a bid of ones. Only real ones count then.
  • Judging a bid before the reveal. A bid is true or false only when the cups are lifted.

Round mistakes

  • Wrong starter. The player who lost the die opens the next round.
  • Rerolling only some dice. After a challenge, every remaining player rerolls all dice.
  • Losing more than one die. The loser of a challenge loses exactly one die. Exact calls and other rules belong to variants.

Etiquette

  • Don’t peek at other cups or show yours.
  • Bluffing is part of the game; changing your dice is cheating.
  • Agree beforehand if you use variants such as calza or a last-die round.

Quick check before you speak

  1. What is the current bid?
  2. Is my raise legal?
  3. Am I switching to or from ones? If so, did I convert?
  4. Would a challenge be smarter?
