Common Crazy Eights mistakes and fixes
Avoid the usual Crazy Eights errors: following an eight’s printed suit, playing several cards, adding action cards and scoring eights wrongly.

On this page
Most Crazy Eights disputes come from a few rule slips. This guide uses the standard five-card-deal rules on our Crazy Eights rules page.
Following the eight’s printed suit
After an eight, the next player must follow the named suit, not the suit printed on the eight. If someone plays 8♠ and calls diamonds, a spade does not qualify just because the eight was a spade. The next card must be a diamond, or another eight.
Forgetting to name a suit
A player who plays an eight must name a suit. If they forget, the next player cannot know what is legal. Name it out loud as you play.
Playing several cards
This ruleset allows one card per turn. Playing a pair or a run of cards together is not part of these rules.
Treating other cards as action cards
Only eights are special here. Twos, queens and aces do nothing special: no draw-two, skip or reverse. Those belong to other versions or to games like UNO. Agree any extra effects before dealing.
Drawing the wrong way
If you cannot play, you draw until you have a legal play or the stock runs out, not just one card. A card you draw and cannot use stays in your hand. Drawing only one card is a variant.
Recycling the discards
When the stock runs out, do not shuffle the discards into a new stock. Players who cannot play simply pass.
Starting with an eight
If the first starter card is an eight, bury it in the stock and reveal another, repeating until the starter is not an eight.
Scoring an eight as 8
Eights are worth 50 points when counted, not 8. Face value applies to the twos through sevens and the nine; kings, queens, jacks and tens are 10 each; an ace is 1.
Stuck tables
If the stock is empty and everyone passes in a row, end the hand with no points and redeal. The standard rules do not settle blocked hands, so agree this convention first.
